Chicken let loose in Benoni High vatican not harmed

A chicken was not harmed after some Benoni High School (BHS) learners brought the animal onto the school’s property with the intention of letting it loose in a classroom, according to the school’s acting principal, Glen van der Westhuizen.

BHS matrics celebrated their 40 days yesterday (August 4).

Van der Westhuizen said the bird was let loose in the vatican.

“I caught it and calmed it down,” he said.

“I could feel how its heart slowed down to the extent that I could pet it.”

The acting principal said he gave the fowl to a teacher who has chickens at home.

The educator then gave the chicken to The Animal Guardians (Tag), who subsequently visited the school.

He said reports that the chicken had been harmed are not true, adding that he condemns animal cruelty.

“We won’t have cruelty on our premises,” van der Westhuizen said.

“We take things like this in a serious light.”

He said he will find the children responsible for the act and will educate them on why their conduct of bringing an animal onto the school’s premises was unacceptable.

Annalise Jungmann, of Tag, said they visited the school after reports that there was another chicken and a goat on the premises.

She said they found no evidence of either.

Jungmann said the rooster which was let loose in the vatican showed no signs of being abused, although she said it was stressed out.

Van der Westhuizen said this year’s 40 days went without incident, barring the chicken incident.
