Capt Ramothakhi Maqabe, Etwatwa SAPS spokesperson, said the youngster lives in Mayfield, but went to Barcelona on July 15 to visit her grandmother.
That night, she and a friend went to a tavern in Barcelona, according to Maqabe.
She was last seen alive by a friend on July 15.
“A community member found her body at about 5am,” the spokesperson said.
“It was lying next to a church in Barcelona.”
The deceased was found half-naked and had head wounds.
Maqabe said underwear was found next to the victim.
He said police cannot at this stage confirm whether the victim was raped or what the cause of death was.
Police are awaiting the post-mortem results.
A case of murder has been opened.
Maqabe asked the community to be patient with police as they investigate the case, as some community members are interfering with the investigation as they are demanding answers from police.
