Two men shot and killed near Snake Road, three arrested

Two people were shot and killed while three others were arrested near Snake Road this afternoon (July 28).

Brig Johan Jacobs, Benoni SAPS station commander, said the police’s Ekurhuleni Central Tactical Team came under fire in a field near Snake and Main Reef roads, at about 3.15pm.

They were acting on information about a group of men, believed to be involved in illegal mining, who were apparently going to target a rival illegal mining group who had allegedly killed three of their members of their group about a month ago.

Jacobs said police came under fire, but retaliated with gunfire, which led to two of the men dying on scene.

The three who were arrested were found in possession of a revolver, pistol and ammunition.

No police officers were injured.

The men are facing charges of attempted murder as well as being in the possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.
