Billing error rectified – metro

The metro said they have rectified the billing error which saw residences across Benoni receive municipal bills for June reflecting information from the same month last year.

The City Times received a number of complaints from residents, saying their bills for June were inaccurate, as they were effectively copies of the bills they received in June 2016.

The metro said the error was “due to incorrect data files used to print statements.”

“The correct statements have been delivered to affected residents and the City of Ekurhuleni wishes to apologise for the inconvenience caused,” the metro said.

In reaction to a question posed by the City Times on Facebook, residents said the online bills were correct.

Jenny Bayley, a Rynfield resident, said the metro has to put checks in place, to prevent similar errors from taking place.

“Hopefully they can make a plan to sort it out, as this also happened with the valuation rolls not too long ago,” Bayley said.

“This must be costing the metro a whole lot of money; doesn’t anyone check these things before they go out?

“What about people who didn’t have accounts last year, or those who moved; did they even receive bills this year June?”

The metro was also asked how many people were affected by the error, how widely the effect was felt within the metro and what the error will cost the metro.

No comment was forthcoming on July 17.
