Rotarians welcome new president

Members of Rotary Club Benoni Aurora held their 26th annual dinner at a masked ball to induct their president for the upcoming year.

The event at Medley House in Brakpan, on July 8, was also organised to celebrate their 25th anniversary with class and elegance.

Founding president Butch Wilson, welcomed the members and guests.

District Governor-elect, Charles Deiner, made a toast to Rotary International while Rotarian, Melissa Lynes Millenial, made a toast to South Africa. Master of Ceremonies – past president Martin Westcott – shared the history of the club throughout the evening.

The club was founded in 1992 under founding president, Butch Wilson.

The 2016/2017 president, Heidi Tucker, thanked her family for their support, guidance and patience.

She also thanked her mentors Butch Wilson, Kevin Norris and Martin Westcott for their wisdom and understanding.

“To every member thank you for participating this year and making sure that the club grows stronger,” she said, adding that without her leadership team she couldn’t have done it because they always supported and challenged her.

Tucker said that she would do it all over again.

Lindy van Moerkerken took over the reins from outgoing president, Heidi Tucker, for the 2017/2018 Rotary year as the fifth women president of the club.

She promised the Benoni Aurora Rotarians that she would be a president who can be counted on.

“It is tremendous honour and privilege to stand before you as your president,” said van Moerkerken.

“Thank you for your trust and faith that you have installed in me as your president.”

Van Moerkerken added that it was her hope and dream that they work together as a club.

“I am certain that my team and I will engage in exciting new projects that will serve our community. The year 2017/2018 theme is: ‘Making a difference’. It is key for us to recognise the importance of the role we play in the community and why we became Rotarians. We are here to serve the community and uplift those around us,” she said.

Lastly, she thanked Tucker for being a true inspiration the past year.

The big wooden spoon, which was presented by Grace van Zyl, was handed over to the new ‘Stirrer of the Year’, Heidi Tucker.

Service awards received by the club under Tucker’s leadership were shown to the members.

Other awards presented during the evening included those for ‘100 per cent attendance’.

A deserving Wilson was also awarded the title, ‘Rotarian of the Year’ for his exceptional service to the club.

At a separate event, Pamela Hull was inducted as the Anns Club of Benoni Aurora President.
