Sweet R100 000 victory for Farrarmere’s Daleen

Victory couldn’t be sweeter for a Farrarmere resident.

Daleen van Schalkwyk’s (56) perseverance won her the title of Huletts Koeksister Champion and R100 000 in prize money.

She won the 2017 edition of the competition, which took place at the Innibos festival, held in Mpumalanga from July 5 to 8.

Van Schalkwyk was one of about 130 entrants in this year’s competition.

She eventually made it to the top three, where she had to bake 3 000 of the tasty delights for festival-goers to eat and vote on.

In the end, she won the taste buds of the public and walked away with the title on July 8.

Having entered the competition the previous year and making it to the top three, she was adamant to win this time around.

“I wanted to win and I said I wouldn’t stop until I won,” said Van Schalkwyk, adding that her treats are “sweet, little devilish things that leave you addicted to them.”

Her son, Ryan Schultz, couldn’t agree more.

“I am surprised that we are still skinny,” he said, adding that he and his siblings grew up in a home where there were copious amounts of biltong and freshly baked food.

The title has already translated into a flurry of orders from people who want to put the sweet sisters to the test and will see Van Schalkwyk register a baking business.
