No celebratory beers for Old Bens after SAB League play-offs

The South African Football Association (SAFA) selected Old Bens Football Club’s first XI for this season’s edition of the South African Breweries (SAB) League Provincial play-offs.

The matches were played over the course of last weekend at Tsakane Stadium.

This comes after Old Bens finished as the top team without an existing SAB League side in the 2016 version of the Eastern Local Football Association’s (ELFA) Super League.

Coach Raymond Cloete’s men opened proceedings in their pool on Friday night (July 7) against Tornado Lions and went down 2-1.

They played Callies FC on Saturday (July 8) and were defeated 3-1.

Cloete said that some of the decisions made by the standing officials in both matches were “questionable”.

The two defeats meant that Bens could not advance to the semi-finals on Sunday, July 9.

The top two teams gained promotion to the SAB League (the fourth tier of South African football and the second highest tier controlled by the South African Football Association).

Attention now turns back to the ELFA Super League fixture against Zwide at Huntersfield Stadium in Katlehong on Saturday, July 15.

With top-of-the-table side Randburg losing 2-1 to Alberton this past weekend, and with Bens still having three games in hand, there is plenty to fight for in the upper echelons of the league.
