Old Bens turn around frustrating match

Old Bens Football Club’s first XI enjoyed a crazy 4-1 away victory over Corinthians in the Eastern Local Football Association’s (ELFA) Super League on June 24.

After a frustrating 1-0 home defeat at Currin Park against Primrose’s Luso Africa the week prior (June 17), the team again struggled to find the back of the net for the majority of the match in their away clash at the Greek Club.

According to Old Bens’ first team coach Raymond Cloete, their opponents opened the scoring in the 35th minute with a cracking strike from about 45m out.

“I think it was their only shot on target the whole day,” he said.

“It was a great goal. After that they went into full defensive mode and we struggled to break them down, as they crowded the goalmouth.”

Cloete, who said he was pulling his hair out in frustration with the 1-0 score, made some telling late substitutions with about 10 minutes to go. Those changes soon paid off for the coach.

Midfielder Steven Webster found the back of the net to level the scores, followed by a further three strikes from Jethson Cloete, James Brough and Wesley Vollmer, to turn what would have been a disappointing afternoon, into a winning 4-1 result.

The club’s reserve side romped to a 6-1 victory against Corinthians in the earlier fixture.

The teams have a bye fixture this coming weekend.
