Stokroos Street man rams into suspected hijackers’ car, punches one to the ground and has to take cover in front of his car to avoid being shot

Three suspected hijackers fled with their tails between their legs after a man rammed his car into their vehicle and punched one to the ground.

This was followed by the resident having to avoid being shot by taking cover in front of his vehicle.

Capt Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson, said the attempted hijacking took place on Stokroos Street, Northmead, at about 5.30am this morning (May 29).

Sekele said a resident was reversing his Audi out of the driveway while his wife opened the gate for him when a car with three male occupants pulled up behind him.

“Suddenly, a white Citi Golf stopped behind him and two suspects jumped out and approached the car,” said Sekele.

“His wife was screaming and shouting ‘look out, look out’.”

The spokesperson said the resident saw two men and each approached the car from a different side.

“As they tried to open the doors he reversed into the Golf,” Sekele added.

“He bumped the suspects’ car, put the car in gear, went forward and then reversed again.”

The resident got out of the vehicle, but police could not confirm whether he was pulled out or whether he opened his own door.

She said the victim punched the suspect standing at the driver’s door, knocking him to the ground.

“The third suspect, who was in the Golf, fired a shot but it hit the palisade,” Sekele said. “This is when the resident took cover in front of his car.”

The three men fled in a damaged vehicle.

No arrests have been made and the resident and his wife were not physically hurt.

An attempted hijacking case has been opened.
