Lay pastor enjoys mentoring others

Quinton de Beer (37) is a lay pastor at the Northfield Methodist Church and spends his time supporting and mentoring others.

BCT: You live in Atlasville. Why is Benoni close to your heart?

QdB: Benoni is a place of many friendships. I have met incredible people in Benoni and cherish those relationships.

I do live in Atlasville, which I believe is an undercover Benoni suburb in Boksburg.

BCT: Tell us about the Paradigm Shift Programme at the church?

QdB: Paradigm Shift exists because people are in poverty and we believe the church should be at the forefront of solving that problem.

The programme is a tool that connects businessmen and -women within the church to micro entrepreneurs in poor communities.

Through business training, discipleship, micro-credit and one-on-one mentoring, volunteers engage in developing entrepreneurs, who, in turn, bring economic possibility to their impoverished communities.

My role is to support the volunteer structures that serve in the Benoni CBD and Daveyton communities.

BCT: What inspired you to join this programme?

QdB: I have been involved with the programme for six years and I believe we have all been blessed with talents and should find ways to share those with others.

I find joy in mentoring others.

BCT: Where is this programme run?

QdB: While the Paradigm Shift Programme currently has a footprint in 11 African countries at 56 venues and presented in four different languages, we currently run the programme at two venues: the Whitehouse Healing Centre in Benoni and Charles Wesley Methodist Church in Daveyton.

BCT: What would you say are the biggest challenges involved with running this kind of programme?

QdB: The greatest challenge is the sheer extent of the need for economic upliftment in our country. My fear is that we will not be able reach all the people who need assistance.

BCT: Tell us about yourself.

QdB: I am married to my soulmate, Lizel de Beer, and we are blessed with three daughters, Caitlin (10), Kaylee (six) and Kristen (four).

BCT: Do you have any hobbies?

QdB: I enjoy mountain biking and golf. In my younger years I enjoyed playing school water polo.

BCT: What are your goals and plans with regards to your career?

QdB: My plan is to serve the community wherever I can and to continue my journey in the ministry of the Methodist Church.
