EMPD officer arrested on statutory rape charge

An EMPD officer working in the K9 unit was arrested on a charge of statutory rape on March 24.

The EMPD was asked whether the man, who is in his 40s, was fired or suspended.

“None of the two. We don’t summarily or arbitrarily suspend or fire before due process takes place,” said Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson.

Kgasago said the man did not get bail at the Brackendowns Police Station and remanded in custody until March 27.

He made his first court appearance on that date at the Palm Ridge Regional Court where his request for bail was denied.

“On March 29 his bail application again failed at Palm Ridge Regional Court and he was remanded in custody.

“He is currently detained at the Boksburg Correctional Services,” said Kgasago.

The man’s next bail application is at the same court on April 5.
