Jacobs Well School opens

Jacobs Well School Benoni, which is in Apex, opened its doors on March 21 with the intention of catering for children with special needs.

“We want to make a difference where it counts,” said Pierre du Toit, CEO of Jacobs Well.

According to Du Toit, the school, which caters for Grade Eight to 12 learners, aims to develop the talents and skills of the children in order to make South Africa a better place.

Since there is a total of only 11 children in each class, teachers can give each learner individual attention.

“It is a wonderful opportunity and we want to revolutionise education,” said Chantelle Watson, the head teacher at the school.

According to Watson, the school curriculum is based on elements of the Finnish education system.

This entails teaching the learners practical life skills through interactive learning.

Apart from educating them, the school counsels and mentors the learners in order to know and understand their individual needs.

However, the challenges faced so far by the school include parents not fully understanding their teaching methods.

“We encourage the children to educate themselves and have the teachers present to facilitate the lessons,” said Watson.

“I believe we should not be limited to a textbook when we have access to other curriculums from all over the world.”

Ward 29 Clr Haseena Ismail shared her hopes for the school and the learners enrolled at the school.

“You need to be educated in life so you can succeed,” she said.

“Each learner is responsible for their own education.”

Ismail emphasised the need for learners to ask for assistance from their teachers in order to reach their goals.

“We expect great things from all the learners,” she said.
