Potholes concern community
The City Times received over 20 complaints about potholes in Benoni, after asking the public to send information to the newspaper so that we can forward it to the municipality.
These locations were listed as problematic:
• Corner of Klipspringer Street and Tsessebe streets, Apex
• President Steyn Street, Rynfield
• Nkosi Avenue and Dhlamini Street, Etwatwa
• Corner of Dube Street and Heidelberg Road, Wattville
• The intersection of Oak and O’Reilly Merry streets, Northmead
• Benoni Road, Rynfield Agricultural Holdings
• Bayley Street, Farrarmere
• Great North Road, just below Fifth Avenue
• Whitman Street, Farrarmere
• Ninth Avenue, Northmead
• Jurgens Street, Benoni Small Farms
• O’Reilly Merry Street, Rynfield
• President Brand Road, Rynfield
• From Bayley Street – after Kei Road – all the way to Mercury Street, Farrarmere
• Cambridge Street between Kei and Coleridge roads, Farrarmere
Ward 27 Clr Jacques Meiring said repairs are not being carried out.
“People need to report potholes,” he said.
“The biggest reason why claims are rejected is because road damage is not reported.
Ward 29 Clr Haseena Ismail said potholes are repaired, but the problem will be fixed when the roads are resurfaced.
“I have contractors in my ward; however, my main concern is the quality of workmanship,” Ismail said.
“The potholes are repaired and then open again after the next rainfall.
“When these potholes are not attended to, they cause damage to vehicles’ tyres and can cause major damages to vehicles and can cause accidents.”
Pieter Henning (Ward 25 Clr) suggested that there should be a team of people who are only assigned to repair potholes.
“The department of roads needs a quality pothole team, as they rely mostly on so-called ‘patching contractors’ who are nothing more than a two-man team operating out of the boot of a motor car or a small bakkie,” Henning said.
“The department should appoint well trained contractors with resources.”
