Diesel shortage to blame for backlog of refuse removal

A shortage of diesel is to blame for a delay in refuse removal across Benoni last week.

Clr André du Plessis (Ward 23) said the metro is experiencing a shortage of diesel.

“Ekurhuleni has two petrol suppliers and two diesel suppliers,” he explained.

“These are emerging contractors, and one of them didn’t perform very well, which led the metro to suspend their contract.

“After that the other diesel supplier had trouble to fill the gap, which lead to frequent shortages of supply to the metro.”

Du Plessis said the contracts with fuel suppliers end in June.

To have new contracts awarded by July 1, a tender process will close at the end of March.

Councillors Jacques Meiring (Ward 27), Kabelo Mahonko (Ward 24) and Sinethemba Matiwane (Ward 73) said refuse collection was catching up in their suburbs, and hoped the remaining backlog would be cleared by March 20.

They concurred the refuse removal depots in Benoni didn’t receive fuel in time, causing the backlog in service.

No comment was received from the metro at the time of going to print.
