Shots fired on N12 after hijacking

One man died and three were arrested shortly after they allegedly hijacked a VW Polo in Etwatwa on the evening of March 3.

The police’s Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson, Const Zunickha Essakjee, said a Benoni Flying Squad member was patrolling when he saw the vehicle on the N12 near Rietfontein Road, resulting in a chase.

“The suspects started shooting at the flying squad member, and shots were returned,” Essakjee said, adding that the suspected hijackers opened fire when the officer turned on his vehicle’s blue lights and siren.

“The driver took the Edenvale off-ramp.”

Essakjee said the suspects crashed into a palisade fence soon after taking the off-ramp, where more gunfire rang out.

The officer who chased the men received assistance from the Germiston Flying Squad.

One of the suspects was fatally wounded while another wounded man managed to escape.

An attempted murder and hijacking case has been opened against the three arrestees.

A 9mm was recovered along with the hijacked car.
