Rynfield resident Matthew Hains has been invited by Microsoft to attend an Education Exchange Summit for a week in Toronto, Canada in March.

The summit is a platform where educators share and exchange ideas relating to technology in the classroom.

Hains said he is one of five teachers from South Africa to have been chosen out of 135 Microsoft education experts worldwide.

“I’m very excited to be nominated; it was a complete surprise,” he said.

Hains explained that his being an active member of the Microsoft network is a possible reason why he was noticed.

“I feel quite privileged and excited to be exposed to an event like this,” said Hains.

“It’s a great opportunity to see how other teachers are using technology in teaching and coming back with new ideas.”

Hains looks forward to gaining knowledge and new ideas on technology that he plans on implementing in his classroom.

“I’m never content with the information I have – I always want to do better and gain more knowledge, especially when it comes to technology,” he said.

“Technology and I are best friends.”

The Computer Applications Technology (CAT) teacher currently teaches Grades Seven to 12 at Woodlands International College.

Hains will be involved in working on a new subject that will be implemented into his school’s curriculum.

The subject will be called Steam (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths), and will teach learners how to use technology to solve problems.

“This means developing and evolving my skills as a teacher,” he said.
