Pool will soon be blue

The water in the Benoni Northerns Swimming Pool in Northmead has recently turned green, but it should be back to blue by the second week of February.

According to the spokesperson at the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), Themba Gadebe, the green pool is the result of a broken pump.

“The City of Ekurhuleni’s investigation reveals that the pump broke at the Benoni Northerns Pool,” Gadebe said.

“The pump was repaired on Wednesday, January 25 and the filtration is back to full capacity.”

Although the pool was still green when the City Times and Ward 27 Clr Jacques Meiring visited it on Friday (February 3), Gadebe said it is still safe to use.

“The water is safe to swim in even though its colour is not blue,” Gadebe added.

But the green water is just one of several issues that Meiring has with the pool.

According to him, the facility requires an upgrade.

“The change rooms need to be upgraded as well as standardised maintenance like the recoating of paint for the pool floor,” Meiring said.

“The marked lines that go into the water are broken and children can get hurt while swimming.”

Meiring also said that the parking bay of Benoni Northerns needs to be fenced off to avoid people from using it over weekends as a drinking spot.

Overall, Meiring said the pool pumps are adequate, but not sufficient.
