Shuping rakes in eight distinctions

One of the greatest challenges for Motshabi Shuping, was running his own race and believing in his own abilities.

“I was diagnosed with atrial septal defect (ASD) in 2015, which is something I was still trying to cope with – and financial issues were also a prominent issue.

ASD is a hole in the wall between the two upper chambers of your heart (atria).

Despite those trials, the St Dunstan’s College student obtained eight distinctions in the 2016 Independent Examination Board (IEB) matric results.

He aced advanced programme English, accounting, Afrikaans, business studies, English, history, life orientation and mathematics.

“My achievements are a direct result of my family’s unwavering support – and certain teachers who uniquely touched my life, both in and out of school,” said Shuping.

“I also succeeded because of my resilience, self belief, hope and my desire to achieve my dreams.”

Shuping will be studying Computer Systems Engineering at the University of Cape Town.

The 19-year-old is fascinated by technology, science and mathematics.

He said this course will enable him to combine his favourite subjects.

“I live for challenges and thinking both creatively and analytically, therefore pursuing this degree fuels my ambitions – both creatively and intellectual.”

The Rynfield resident said his parents and siblings have played a vital role in his success.

“Their constant faith and belief in me was unbelievable, especially when I couldn’t believe in myself – and God was the central figure of support. Without him, none of it would be possible,” he said.

Shuping encouraged this year’s matriculants to run their own race and live with all the decisions they make.

“Don’t waste your time comparing yourself to other people. The presence of someone else’s intellect and talent, isn’t the absence of your own.”
