Resident objects to excessive noise levels in Northmead

Stacey Farrance writes:

This letter serves to address a problem that has arisen from the events that are being hosted by Benoni Northerns, and the extremely loud music and commentating that accompanies these events.

Benoni Northerns has for many years hosted events that involved a bit of music and commentating, but nothing that wasn’t tolerable.

However, Benoni Northerns have now gone to all this expense (specifically on the swimming pool side with the new Astroturf) for this exposure and are now using sound systems and hosting events that would only be acceptable in stadiums, without the slightest concern for the residents that are constantly being affected by the excessive noise levels that we are exposed to almost every Saturday and Sunday.

While being mindful of the fact that the establishment has been functioning for many years as a sports facility; with the recent upgrades, would the management and events organisers that make use of the facility also be mindful of the fact that they are not in an events stadium and are actually in a residential area?

Editor’s note:

Craig Wittstock, chairperson of Benoni Northerns Sports Club, replies:

Benoni Northerns Sports Club is a community-based sports club.

We primarily focus on sporting events, but also host several larger events (four to five a year).

These are often charity/community or family-based events.

We realise there is some inevitable inconvenience related to these events, but we feel the positives far outweigh the negatives, and the feedback we have had from the public reflects this.

I can assure the writer and other members of public that we carefully consider which events we host, focusing on a benefit for the community and the club.

We are always grateful to everyone who takes part and puts up with the inconvenience.

We feel, that together, we are all helping to sustain a valuable asset in the area and that these events showcase the vibrant community spirit that still exists in Benoni.
