No clarity about wheelie bins

While many Benonians scurried to collect wheelie bins earlier this year to ensure that their refuse would be collected, the metro has not said when the switch-over from refuse bags to wheelie bins will commence.

In an article published at the end of June, metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the roll-out of bins should have been complete by the end of June.

However, the City Times has been told that refuse is currently being collected, regardless of whether it’s in bins or bags on pavements.

Ward 27 Clr Jacques Meiring said the tender for the receptacles had to be re-issued, which he has been told is now complete.

Meiring said the roll-out of bins in Benoni is not yet complete and he does not know when this will resume.

“At no time in the near future will they stop collecting the bags,” said Meiring.

Gadebe said: “The City of Ekurhuleni will switch to only collecting refuse from the wheelie bins.”

“This will be done once everyone has wheelie bins; residents will also be informed of the change of refuse collection.”

He said a “few houses” are still without the 240l receptacles.

The municipality said the bins may still be collected from 4 Golden Drive, Morehill during office hours from Mondays to Fridays between 8am and 3.30pm.
