Spot Vision Screener helps identify potential eye issues

The Benoni Lakes Lions Club has purchased a Spot Vision Screener in an effort to make people aware of the condition of their eyes.

With the vision screener they hope to reach as many people as possible, especially children in schools, to detect poor eyesight and help them seek proper treatment.

The Spot Vision Screener is a portable device which takes only a few moments to screen your eyes and provide a thorough and easy-to-read report.

The report reveals if both eyes have vision problems such as near-sightedness, far sightedness, astigmatism and unequal fraction.

“We introduced the screener to Lions in southern Africa some time ago and we are proud to have been able to purchase our own device which will allow us to greater serve the community,” said club president Nick Maré.

“It is important to note that the screening does not replace a complete eye examination by an ophthalmologist or optometrist but must be seen as an enhancement to detecting vision issues.”

He said they have already conducted about 8 000 screenings with a temporary screener that belonged to the district, before they could purchase their own.

Up to 300 people can be screened a day.

“We once visited a school and screened a little boy who had five different things wrong with his eyes,” said Maré.

“Sometimes a child is identified as a problem child when, in fact, they just cannot see.”

While their main aim is to have children’s eyes tested, they also want to reach companies, organisations, schools and old age homes for mass screenings.

“The more people we can screen, the more people will have a better chance of getting treatment and seeing better,” Maré said.
