UPDATE: Fifty-three Etwatwa residents are released

The 53 residents of Etwatwa who were arrested on October 26, for further investigation, have been released.

The residents were arrested after two people, who are suspected gang members, were beaten to death and their bodies left near a railway line on Monday night (October 24).

The suspects were charged with public violence, possession of dangerous weapons and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Police haven’t linked the residents to the two alleged gang members who were beaten to death.

Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Lieut-Col Lungelo Dlamini said the residents were arrested after they allegedly attacked two people believed to be members of the “OVL” gang.

“Residents armed with dangerous weapons were on a manhunt for OVL members, who are believed to have been involved in violent crimes in the area,” added Dlamini.

“At this stage, investigations are continuing to establish if the victims were members of the gang or not.”

Two other people were seriously injured when the accused persons allegedly beat them up.

The injured were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Police have warned community members against taking the law into their own hands.

They encouraged residents to report crimes to the police.
