Proud achievement from local martial artists

The 10th World Martial Arts Games were held in South Africa, at the Ticket Pro Dome in Randburg from the October 14 to 16.

The 11 countries that participated are Germany, Iran, India, England, Canada, Namibia, Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe, USA and South Africa, with 500 contestants competing.

The United Martial Arts Benoni team, together with United Martial Arts’ other clubs (72 contestants), won 141 medals in total (54 gold, 48 silver and 39 bronze).

“This is an outstanding achievement,” said Shihan Aslam Mahomed, chief instructor of the United Martial Arts Dojo Benoni.

“Our local students have scooped medals and titles in almost all divisions, making us one of the best teams in the world.

“Congratulations to all the athletes on their outstanding achievements, and a special thanks to all our officials, coaches, parents, referees and team managers.

“An honourable moment was when our Benoni team was told to share the stage at the opening ceremony for Last Fighter Standing (LFS) with Hollywood film star Michael Jae White.”

Ahmad Mahomed, Taahirah Cajee, Mahmood Mahomed, Aakifah Akoodie, Muhammad Mia and Aslam Mahomed took part in the opening ceremony.
