Intervention aimed at homeless people

A 68-year-old woman hopes her research will lead to an intervention aimed at Benoni’s homeless.

Vivienne Keen plans to complete her Master’s degree in theology by June 2017, through the University of South Africa (Unisa).

“The decision to do my Master’s at this particular time just happened as a result of life events and I believe that God has been the director from the beginning,” said Keen.

The main focus of her thesis is the study of homeless people, in particular the homeless adults of Benoni and the role that they play in society.

Her reasons for focusing on this topic is due to her constant interaction and participation with people within this community.

“I am focused on homeless people, specifically, because I have personally had to deal with their presence and personally perceived unwanted interruptions in my life, such as at the church gate, on the streets and at friends’ homes,” she said.

“I realised that this was a problem to which I must find a solution from my personal point of view.

“Added to this, I have been studying various subjects at Unisa since 2002, theology being the chief study, and it dawned upon me that I could attack my problem with the homeless people from a Christian approach, using the research as the case study for a Master’s degree in theology, specialising in Christian spirituality, which I am currently pursuing.”

Upon completion of her qualification, Keen aims to create change in the lives of the homeless in Benoni.

“My hope is to somehow make a difference through my research and, subsequently, I hope for an intervention in the formation of a Benoni Homeless Forum,” she said.

Although Keen is a Kempton Park resident, she spends some of her time within the Benoni community, at St Dunstan’s Cathedral, which she attends.
