Old Bens, Northerns get Super League wins

The first teams of the Old Bens and Benoni Northerns football clubs both enjoyed ELFA Super League wins, last week.

Old Bens had their away fixture, with Boksburg brought forward to the night of Thursday, September 1.

At the Boksburg Stadium, coach Raymond Cloete’s Bens outfit took an early 2-0 lead, courtesy of a superb long distance strike from midfielder Steven Webster and fellow midfielder Lasego “Wii” Mlangeni, who latched on to a Lesiba Modau cross, before casual defending from Bens allowed the Boksburg side in twice, to equal the score line before the break.

Cloete introduced some changes at halftime, in the shape of striker Percy Visagie, Jethson Cloete and Ludick Malele.

The alterations paid dividends and the fitness levels of the Boksburg players faltered as Bens added three more goals to secure a 5-2 win.

Visagie bagged a brace of goals, while Modau also scored.

On Saturday, September 3, coach Jannie van den Berg’s Northerns also picked up all three points in their home clash versus Olympia, despite going down to three men.

Northerns led 2-0 at the break, through goals from skipper Wade Marshall and another converted free kick from Keegan Frawley.

Olympia did manage to get a goal before Northerns’ Kwanda Sokutu pounced on a goalkeeping howler to extend the lead to 3-1.

That is how it would end.

With two game weeks remaining in the competition, both sides will be looking to bow out with double victories.

This Saturday, September 10, Old Bens host Corinthians at Currin Park, while Northerns host Randburg, where van den Berg’s men could put a major dent in their weekend opponents’ title ambitions.

Both matches kick-off at 3.30pm.
