Wood club needs youth

The youth has to become involved in woodworking if the craft is to survive as a profession and a hobby.

This was the sentiment of Georg Stroebel, founder of the East Rand Woodworkers’ Association (ERWA), at its Working with Wood Fair.

ERWA held their 13th annual Working with Wood Fair, at the Northfield Methodist Church, on Saturday September 3.

“This event is meant to inspire young and old people about woodworking,” said Mark Lemmer, organiser of the event.

“It teaches people more about the craft and creates self-employment opportunities.”

Stroebel started the organisation about 14 years ago.

“The club is doing well, but we are struggling to attract young people to the craft,” said Stroebel.

“This is the best hobby someone could practise and you can continue with it past retirement.”

The organisation meets every third Wednesday of the month, at the Northfield Methodist Church, at 6pm.
