Dog rescued after living in a drain for six months

A Benoni animal rescue organisation saved a two-year-old female chow after the dog had been living in a drain for six months.

It is believed the dog, Mika, took refuge in a drain in Springs after being abandoned by its owners before it was rescued on May 6.

Springs resident Catherine van Rensburg saw that the dog was staying in the storm water drain after its owners moved out of their home.

Van Rensburg fed the chow for six months before she notified the Benoni Animal Rescue Centre (Barc) of her.

Barc’s Charmaine Woest took Mika into her home in an attempt to rehabilitate the dog with the help of animal behaviourist Angela Kapp, who offered to work with Mika.

“She (Mika) was scared of humans in the beginning after I took her to stay with me,” Woest said, “but eventually she let me touch her and she started to warm up to me.”

Woest said by May 10 Mika’s progress was good and she began responding to their call.

Woest said Barc was grateful for the outpouring of love and support for Mika, and by May 22, Mika had already been adopted by her new family.

Damian and his wife Taryn Murphy saw Mika’s story on the Facebook page, Chow Chow Africa.

They then contacted Barc to adopt the two-year-old canine.

The Edenvale couple already own two other chow breeds in their home, which is what Woest said gave her the confidence to give Mika to them on June 3.
