Woman of 98 receives new home

A 98-year-old woman, whose left leg was amputated when she was a teenager, received a new house recently, courtesy of the community.

Magdalene Mabena was joined by family and neighbours, as well as a pastor, who blessed her new Daveyton residence.

Reginald Mahlangu, chairperson of the Daveyton Standup Committee, said the organisation noticed Magdalene’s house was in a dilapidated state.

“We knocked down the old building and the new home was built in one week,” he explained.

A construction company sponsored the project.

Magdalene’s granddaughter, Mbalenhle Mabena, said the 98-year-old is very happy that the community helped to rebuild her house.

“The house was full of leakages, it still had asbestos roof tiles and developed cracks in the walls,” she added.

Translating for her grandmother, Mbalenhle explained that Magdalene lost her left leg in her teen years.

“She was bitten by a snake and the whole leg had to be amputated,” she said.

Magdalene has survived eight of her 12 children and lost her husband over 30 years ago.

Her surviving son could not attend the handover of the house, but her three surviving daughters were all present.

Elizabeth Mabena, the second born, travelled from Kameelrivier, in Mpumalanga, to witness the blessing of her mother’s new dwelling.

Elizabeth said her mother was born in Delmas and moved to the Daveyton yard in 1956.

Pastor Khaya Mnyanda, from the Northfield Methodist Church, prayed for love and laughter to infuse the home and that Magdalene should reach at least 100 years of age.

He asked the gathering of family and friends to lay hands on Magdalene and ended off by sprinkling blessed water in every room of the residence.
