Marimba festival attracts hundreds

The fifth annual Education Africa International Marimba and Steelpan Festival was held at Tom Newby School, for the first time.

The school hosted a crowd of hundreds, with 80 institutions (including school and adult bands) taking part in the competition, over the weekend of July 30.

Linda Gould (operations director at Education Africa) said all nine provinces were represented and bands from Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swaziland and Botswana also attended the festival.

“The bands were playing in the marquee and we also had workshops in marimba and steelpan in some of the classes,” she added.

“In co-operation with the Department of Arts and Culture, we also brought children from under-resourced communities to participate in the festival.”
