Emergency services on high alert

The cold weather has forced the municipality’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) to be on high alert.

William Ntladi, media liaison for emergency services, warned people to be careful when they heat their homes, especially in informal settlements.

“Adults and parents at large as requested to be on high alert as well making sure that they keep matches out of children’s hands,” said Ntladi.

“Open flames such as candles, braziers and all types of heaters shouldn’t be left unattended at any time.

“Veld fires can be caused by human actions, like throwing lit cigarette butts into dry grass.”

In case of emergencies, call 10177 or 011 458 0911, or on a cellphone dial 112.

Ensure that you have the emergency call centre telephone numbers saved and visible on your telephone or cellphone.

“Speak clearly on the phone when reporting an emergency,” Ntladi added.

“Provide the operators with all the necessary details required.

“Do not end the conversation until all questions are answered.”
