Influx of flamingos in Benoni

Catherine Marques, secretary of the Korsman Conservancy, writes in reply to the letter from Makau Doris Masemola:

Doris, it is very likely that these are, indeed, flamingos.

This winter I have seen Greater Flamingos at many wetlands in and around Benoni, including Civic Lake at the Lakeside Mall, and Homestead Dam in Farrarmere.

There are also many flamingos at Korsman Bird Sanctuary in Westdene, including a large number of Lesser Flamingos.

As I recall, in the past flamingos would simply pass through Benoni on their way to their breeding grounds at Kamfer Dam, in Kimberley, or to countries like Botswana and Namibia.

I wonder if anyone can suggest a reason for this new pattern of behaviour?

Thanks, Doris, for sharing this information with us!
