Suspects, armed with rifles, shot at EMPD officers shortly after bombing an ATM last night (June 20).

The incident occurred at Rynfield Terrace Shopping Centre at around 11pm.

According to Capt Nomsa Sekele, Ekurhuleni Central SAPS Cluster spokesperson, eight shots were fired at EMPD officers after the explosion.

“The officers returned fire; nobody was hurt and the suspects did not take any money,” said Sekele.

“With these new ATMs, they can’t get money out easily, even using a bomb.”

Sekele said the bombers were carrying rifles.

Wendy Parente said she heard the explosion from her home, in Cloverdene.

Parente resides in Seventh Road and was woken up by a loud noise at around 11pm.

“I was dozing off, then heard a hell of a big noise,” she said.

“We hear gunshots here often, so I know the difference between an explosion and a gunshot.”

Parente added she heard three separate explosions.

Sekele could not confirm the number of explosions at the time of publication and she said no arrests had been made yet.

Rynfield Terrace management did not want to comment on the matter.
