EMPD recovers drugs worth over R100 000

Two men have been arrested in separate incidents, for being in possession of drugs worth over R100 000.

EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit members apprehended a 28-year-old Nigerian national at a hosing complex, on June 19.

EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago said members received a tip-off from a “reliable source”.

“The suspected drug dealer was put under surveillance for a week,” said Kgasago.

“The patience of the metro police bore fruit when they pounced on the suspect in his room at the Calderwood Lifestyle flats, in Extension 13, in Benoni, and uncovered a massive quantity of CAT in block form.”

Authorities also discovered cash totalling R21 500, believed to be the proceeds of the illicit drug-trading.

In the second case, a tip-off led to the arrest of a 26-year-old Nigerian national, in Actonville, on June 16.

The EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit members arrested the person for being in possession of Ecstasy and CAT, worth an estimated R8 000.

“The arrest was effected after the suspect’s house was monitored for a several days, with the objective of gathering more information and identifying individuals with who the suspect engages in his nefarious deed,” Kgasago said.

Both men were charged with possession of and dealing in illicit substances.

They were expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on June 20.
