Orlando shooting victim might have ties to Benoni
According to media reports, one of the Pulse nightclub shooting victims was from Benoni.
The website of the City of Orlando, Florida, where the shooting took place, listed a Peter O Gonzalez-Cruz as one of the 50 victims.
According to buzzfeed.com, heavy.com and the website of the Orlando Sentinel, Gonzalez-Cruz was also known as Peter Ommy.
A Facebook page under Peter Ommy states his hometown is Benoni, in Gauteng.
Nelson Kgwete, spokesperson for the South African Department of International Relations said the department is investigating claims that one of the victims had South African ties.
“Our embassies in Washington DC and New York City are working with the authorities to find out more,’’ he added.
The attack, in which a gunman went on a rampage at a gay nightclub in Florida, US, left at least 50 people dead on Sunday.
It has been called the deadliest mass shooting in US history.
