Talks aimed at reaching social stability

South Africans cannot afford or allow hate-driven conduct to be passed on to future generations.

Tamboville resident Abie Nyalunga made this statement in the hope of encouraging people to participate in sustainable local anti-hate programmes that will yield social cohesion.

Nyalunga said South Africans have experienced an increase in acts and pronouncements of hate against and for each other, in the form of racism, xenophobia, tribalism, sexism, political intolerance, rapes and murders, abuse of women, children, disabled and the elderly, distasteful comments on different media platforms and violent behaviour.

“Most often conferences and dialogues are conducted by prominent organisations and individuals trying to address these societal ills,” said Nyalunga.

“These events are usually held in major cities, hotels and conference centres that are not accessible to ordinary citizens.

“The majority of peace-loving South Africans who are affected by these prejudices and practices have little and no say on what, how they feel, how they want to live in harmony and what they think should be done to address these societal ills.”

He said effective and sustainable solutions can be found amongst ordinary citizens.

“South Africa is the only home for us, our children and generations to come; therefore, we need to act now,” said Nyalunga.

The Benoni resident is looking for the following to kick-start the dialogues:

• Person/organisation for hosting of the first meeting in and around Benoni, Boksburg and Brakpan (these areas are chosen purely for logistical reasons)

• Stationery for the first planning meeting

• Refreshments

• Motivational moral and cultural speaker/s

• Any other material, financial or personnel contribution as this is not a once-off event
