‘Draw is a fair reflection’

Wet, cold and muddy conditions made a difficult prospect that much more daunting for Benoni Northerns Football Club’s (BNFC) first XI when they travelled to the Primrose headquarters of Luso Africa on Saturday, May 14.

Luso (last season’s third-best squad in the ELFA Super League) boast a number of former BNFC players in their squad which made the match interesting before a ball was kicked.

The game played out to a 1-1 draw – a valuable point for Northerns coach Jannie van der Berg’s men in a perennially tough encounter.

Ernest Makalaka up front scored the sole strike for BNFC, but later went off with an injury to an eye.

Van den Berg told the City Times that once again the game could have gone either way.

“The score is a fair reflection of how the match went, and I cannot complain about the performance,” he said.

“Our youngsters matched their experience.”

According to the coach, at the time of going to press, the team was not even thinking about Saturday’s Benoni Derby against Old Bens as they had an away ELFA Cup date to look forward to with Highlands Park on the night of Wednesday, May 18.
