Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the incident took place at a tavern along Great North Road, at 9.15pm on April 24.
“On arrival, police found the deceased face down with injuries to his upper body,” said Sekele.
“It is alleged that the suspect beat the victim to death and fled the scene.
“The emergency services were summoned and certified the victim dead on the scene.”
Benoni detectives arrested the suspect on April 25.
Sekele could not confirm where the man was caught.
The suspected appeared in the Benoni Magistrates Court on April 26, on a murder charge.
He was remanded in custody until his next appearance, on May 6.
