Benoni City Hall should reopen next year

The Benoni City Hall is expected to reopen its doors to the public by July 2017.

“The construction will take close to 10 months to be completed,” said Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) spokesperson, Themba Gadebe.

“The estimate cost is around R46-million.”

Although Gadebe said construction will start once approval has been granted, it is estimated that work should start in September, this year.

The 79-year-old Benoni City Hall, which is situated in the Benoni CBD, has not been operational since 2014.

“I am not happy with the progress,” said ward 73’s Clr Samuel Ngobese.

However, Gadebe said there has been some progress in fixing the problems concerning the hall since it closed its doors to the public.

“Waterproofing has been completed,” he said.

“The plan is to continue with the building renovations and rectification of damaged walls and floors, as well as electrical installations.”

In the meantime, Gadebe advised residents to use various other available facilities, like the Actonville Community Centre.
