Visiting Vereeniging victorious

Benoni Rugby Club hosted their first home league match of the 2016 Valke Peregrine League campaign, when they welcomed Vereeniging to their Hoërskool Hans Moore home base, on Saturday, April 2.

Results, however, were not favourable as the hosts were given a rugby lesson.

The club’s second XV went down 41-7 and managed to score only a solitary try in response to their visitors’ seven.

At times Benoni showed signs of playing fantastic rugby, but they couldn’t do enough to stop Vereeniging on the attack.

The first side would rather forget Saturday, as they were on the wrong end of a 93-21 defeat.

Coming out with guns blazing, the Vereeniging outfit bombarded the Benoni try line to take a 38-0 advantage into the halftime break.

They continued where they left off in the second period, by going over the Benoni whitewash within just 47 seconds.

Benoni answered 11th minutes later, with their first try by hooker Wessel Duvenage.

Fly-half Jeff Gerall dotted down Benoni’s second try and inside centre Takkie van Staden scored the third in the 64th minute.

Fullback Eugene Horn converted all three tries, but it was not enough to reply to a well-structured Vereeniging pack.

The visitors scored 15 tries and converted nine.
