UPDATE: Superbike racer (19) dies

The collision which took place earlier this morning, on Pretoria Road, killing 19-year-old superbike racer Anthony Shelley, has left many heartbroken.

“He lived in Pretoria during the week and came home at weekends,” said his step-mother, Amelia van As.

This morning (April 4), at 7am, Shelley was involved in a collision with a bakkie.

“Unfortunately, nothing more could be done for the patient and he was declared dead on scene,” said ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring.

“He was on his way to work in Pretoria,” said a family friend, Ivan Jordaan.

The talented rider, known for his racing number #74 received numerous outpourings of condolences from the motorsport fraternity and friends on his Facebook page.

Shelley achieved his big break at the 10th National 600 Super Sport Race, at the Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria, at the tender age of 17.

His step-mother referred to him as one of the best racers she knew.

She told the City Times this morning that the family could not comment further at this stage.
