Steel piping will replace brittle old water lines

After three weeks of on-and-off trouble with the 800mm main supply pipe in Van Ryn Small Holdings, the line is set to be permanently replaced.

Clr Stefanie Kruger (Ward 24) said the section running from the corner of Fifth and North roads, where the fractures and repairs took place, to the reservoir, about 100m further, would be substituted by steel piping.

Kruger added that the piping would be ordered this week, but could not specify when it would arrive.

She said the water system to Crystal Park, Cloverdene and Van Ryn Small Holdings would again be left dry while the infrastructure was being replaced.

Peter Johnson, a Morehill resident, called his area the “forgotten suburb”.

“We were off for about seven days; the water only came back on Sunday (March 13),” he said.

“We’ve been encouraged to save water, but so much is being wasted here.”

When he was told about the possibility of another interruption during the upcoming pipe replacement, Johnson said: “If it solves the problem, I’m glad they’re doing it.”

The four suburbs were left without a water supply over most of the weekend, as well as for five days a week earlier and several days the week before that.

This came after the pipe burst three weeks ago and was being repaired over the following weeks.

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) was approached for comment, but none had been received at the time of publication.
