Weather delays restart of Pretoria Road work

The continuation of work on Pretoria Road was delayed by two days of rain.

Clr Stefanie Kruger (Ward 24) said the new contractor was supposed to have started on Wednesday (March 9), but the sudden rains forced the work to be postponed.

She added that the contractor was now expected to start on Friday (March 11), if the rain subsided, after which work would continue over the weekend, to “make up for lost time”.

The starting date for the project was previously reported by the City Times as March 2, but was later delayed by a week.

According to Kruger, the reason for the initial delay was that the contractor waited for plans of the arterial road from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM).

On March 9, she said all the work on Pretoria Road is expected to be completed within two months and a week.

“They [the newly contracted company] know what they are doing; they’re also working on the Putfontein Road off-ramp on the N12, which looks good so far,” she added.

The previous contractor was allegedly dismissed due to missing the deadline to finish the construction work on Pretoria Road.

At the time of the dismissal, in January, around 200m of work still had to be completed on the arterial road, leaving it essentially un-tarred until March.

The EMM was approached for comment, but none had been received at the time of publication.
