Police warn bikers to be careful

Police are urging a motorcyclist to open a case of attempted murder after the rider was allegedly shot at in New Modder.

A video is doing the rounds on social media where at least two off-road motorbike riders are seen riding in the veld, apparently at Chimes, in New Modder.

The bikers rode in single file with the front rider recording the trip.

About 30 seconds into the video clip posted on Facebook, a person is seen running from the left of the frame, apparently firing shots.

The biker continued riding and does not appeared to be harmed.

Benoni SAPS acting station commander Col Martin van Nieuwenhuizen told the City Times this morning that he has seen the video, but that no one has come forward to open a case.

Although it is unclear where exactly the incident occurred or when it happened, Van Nieuwenhuizen said lots of bikers are known to ride in the area called Chimes on weekends.

He said if it happened where he thinks it did, the place is not an illegal mining hot spot, but rather a corridor used by illegal miners.

Van Nieuwenhuizen said the gunman is not necessarily an illegal miner, and is sure the person wanted to rob the riders.

“Illegal miners won’t attract attention to them,” he said.

“They go with the opinion if I leave you alone you will leave me alone.”

The acting station commander said bikers must be vigilant in the area of Chimes.

“If it happened once, the same person will try again; they (bikers) are easy targets.”
