Pupils reduced to tears as school is broken into

A group of Grade Five pupils were in tears this morning (February 17) when they heard their school was broken into.

“The children are disappointed,” said Venessa Moodley, headmistress at Actonville Primary School.

“They were in tears this morning and asked how they (criminals) can steal from us.”

Moodley’s school was broken into at around 5am.

The burglars entered through the school’s fence, after they broke off one of the vertical uprights on the palisade fence.

They broke into four classrooms, including a maths centre.

The culprits failed to gain entry into the science laboratory, but locks on the door were damaged.

Moodley said paper, stationery and a flat screen TV was stolen.

Learning was disrupted in the affected classrooms, with teaching resuming at around 12.30pm after police finished taking fingerprints from the scene.

Moodley said 700 out of the 1 300 children at the school are registered as indigents, meaning the school is heavily reliant on handouts.

“We have parents that have been giving to the school and for it to be taken from them is sad,” Moodley added.

A case of business burglary has been opened at the Actonville Police Station.

No arrests have been made.
