Home-Start needs volunteers

Home-Start believes that every child deserves the best start in life and provides emotional support, friendship and practical guidance to families with young children in South Africa.

The organisation’s main objectives are to keep children safe, to empower families and equip them with life skills.

The Home-Start training course of preparation enhances volunteers’ existing skills and equips them with new skills to prepare them to support parents and offer practical help to families in need.

Home-Start forms relationships and partnerships with health, social and education partners, to extend the network of support for families.

Parents come to the organisation for the following reasons: the illness or disability of a child; illness of a parent; poor housing and poverty; the demands of a large family or twins; drug or alcohol abuse and, in some cases, child abuse.

The organisation understands that raising children can be difficult under normal circumstances and makes its services easily available to families, relying on volunteers to work with families who have young children.

Home-Start is in need of people who can work as volunteers to become a part of the organisation, because there are many families in Benoni who are in need.

The volunteers are generally parents or have parenting experience.

They undergo extensive training, according to strict standards; on-going training and supervision is also given to them throughout their period of service.

The role of the volunteer is to reassure parents that their problems are not unique and to encourage families to enjoy themselves together.

Volunteers share their time and friendship, providing families with the opportunity to develop new relationships, as well as enhanced skills and abilities.

If you would like to volunteer at Home-Start, contact Erica Strydom on 011 845 1116.
