UPDATE: Third suspect arrested for murder of EMPD officer

A third man has been arrested in connection with the death of EMPD officer Maj Coert Jordaan (39), on Friday, January 29.

Jordaan, who had been part of the EMPD Equestrian Unit, based in Petit, was found dead at Aston Lake in Springs on Wednesday.

Lt Col Lungelo Dlamini, SAPS provincial spokesperson, said it was unclear whether Jordaan had been shot or stabbed with a sharp object.

He added Jordaan’s car, wallet, cell phone and firearm had been stolen.

Two of the suspects were arrested by EMPD in Daveyton on Thursday night.

“Two suspects have been arrested and a stolen vehicle, two firearms and a knife were recovered,” said Dlamini.

“The suspects will be charged with murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and possession of a stolen vehicle when they appear at the Springs Magistrate’s Court within 48 hours.”

Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesperson, said a third suspect was arrested in Daveyton at 10am today.

Ekurhuleni’s mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, condemned the murder of Jordaan on Thursday, January 28.

Gungubele further expressed his sadness at the fact that Jordaan’s murder had occurred on National Police Day, “a day set aside to acknowledge the sacrifices of these men and women in the fight against lawlessness”.

“They sacrifice their own safety for us to enjoy peace and order, and for this they must be celebrated and not murdered,” the mayor added.

Jordaan is survived by his wife, Angelique (30) and their daughter, Klarebel (3).

At the time of publication, Angelique was too upset to comment.
