UPDATE: Father grateful family not hurt in N12 accident

A father expressed his relief that four of his loved ones were not seriously injured after the car they were travelling in veered off the N12 highway and down an embankment.

The incident happened between Atlas Road and Tom Jones Street, when travelling east, on January 6, at around 4pm.

Darryl Zackey said his fiancé, Monique Venter, mother Cheryl and daughters Kayla (4) and Savanna (3) Zackey were on the road when the vehicle started veering to the right.

Monique compensated by steering to the left, but over corrected and crashed through a barrier and down a 2m to 3m embankment, causing the car to land on its roof.

Darryl said paramedics toiled for about 30 minutes to retrieve Kayla from her seat.

ER24 paramedic Grant Barrett said all four occupants were transported to the Sunshine Hospital.

Monique has a fractured collar bone while Kayla has a fractured ankle and a slight head injury.

Darryl believes the crash could have been far worse had the car not landed on a soft surface of mud, as that cushioned the impact.

“Thank God. It could have been worse; I am very blessed,” said Darryl.
