Schwär rakes in eight distinctions

St Dunstan's College pupil Maike Schwär obtained eight distinctions in the 2015 Independent Examination Board (IEB) matric results.

She aced English home language, Afrikaans first additional language, mathematics, physical sciences, accounting, business studies, advanced programme mathematics and life orientation.

“I worked hard for what I wanted to achieve,” said Schwär.

Setting goals for herself, she constantly had to remain motivated to reach her objectives.

Juggling school and rehearsals was the formula she used to keep her “sane” when school got a bit much.

“You can’t just study, you must have a balance,” said Schwär.

Being part of the East Rand Youth Orchestra, playing the violin and the flute, provided Schwär with an escape.

Schwär said advanced programme mathematics was her most challenging subject.

“It was the most challenging, it was also the subject I enjoyed the most,” she said. “It was a love, hate relationship,” she said, while laughing.

Schwär will study actuarial science at the University of Pretoria this year.

She looks forward to starting a new chapter in her life and meeting new people.

Her mother, Marlize Schwär, said: “We are extremely proud of her and this just shows that hard work pays off.” “We hope she will excel in maths as she did in high school.”

Schwär encouraged this year’s matriculants to work hard and play hard.
