Remembering a loved one

The Hospice East Rand Tree of Memories project will continue until the end of January.

Residents can still remember their loved ones by making a donation to the project, where their names will be put up on the special tree at the Hospice East Rand office, on Kemston Avenue.

Brenda Bisschoff, administrative manager for Hospice East Rand, said the money donated goes to patients who can’t afford to pay for their health care needs.

“We take care of everyone whether you have money or not,” added Bisschoff.

Every year a large number of people attend the annual lighting of the Hospice Tree of Memories, at the Northfield Methodist Church, in November.

Residents celebrate this event by buying a candle in memory of a loved one, this is to give support to Hospice for their vital community services in caring for those who are terminally ill and their families.

On the day, Hospice staff members and volunteers light the candles on behalf of the residents.

This year was the 25th celebration of the Tree of Memories.

Scotty Dustan, volunteer at Hospice, said it’s great to see the survivors and families of patients who have died coming together to celebrate their loved ones.

“The celebration is an important symbol of love,” added Dustan.

The crowd was entertained by the Welsh Male Voice Choir and the St Dunstan’s College Choir this year.
