New meters will reduce leaks

To reduce water leaks, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) will install 30 000 water metres before the end of 2016.

A total of 31 000 new water meters have been replaced.

The head of Water and Sanitation at the EMM, Philemon Mashoko, addressed the issue of water at a recent Press Club meeting, in Bedfordview.

Mashoko said old water meters within the metro – which are unable to record accurate readings – have resulted in the municipality having to take estimates.

The installing of new meters is one of the top priorities which the municipality is focused on implementing in the new year.

New contractors were appointed last week and have started working on the backlog of water leaks that need to be repaired within Ekurhuleni.

“We hope that most of the leaks will be fixed by January or February, next year,” said Mashoko.

“Contractors will be working around the clock to get these leaks fixed.”

The turn around time for leaks to be fixed is 48 hours, although the municipality strives to do so in less time.

Water restrictions were implemented in Ekurhuleni in mid-November and continue to be in place until further notice.

The public is urged to continue preserving as much water as possible during the festive season.
